Yesterday, EA and DICE officially unveiled Battlefield 4, the 4th instalment to their long running FPS franchise. I’ve been playing Battlefield 3 on my Xbox since release and I just downloaded Battlefield 3 for the PC a few days ago which is a FREE gift from EA and Maxis for their very problematic first week / launch of Sim City.

“but when I saw the 17 minute gameplay video, I can say that Battlefield 4, when it comes to visuals, blows Battlefield 3 out of the water.”

I was really surprised with the graphics difference (using GeForce GTX680) of the PC version over the console version because I really didn’t bother on getting the PC version of the game from the start since most of my friends are playing on PS3 or Xbox. Until now, the PC graphics of Battlefield 3 is still top notch but when I saw the 17 minute gameplay video, I can say that Battlefield 4, when it comes to visuals, blows Battlefield 3 out of the water.

The game runs on top of Frosbite 3, the 3rd iteration of DICE’s self developed game engine. DICE said that the engine has a lot of new features for next-gen gaming. It was designed to create a “dynamic, human and believable experience” and allow for improved animations, destruction (Destruction 4.0) and AI. They’re not lying. I saw all of the things they mentioned about Frostbite 3 on the 17 minute gameplay video. The gameplay was humanly believable, dynamic, has an awesome animation, and contains some crazy destruction effects and set pieces I never saw on Battlefield 3.

It’s pretty obvious that the 17 minute gameplay was demoed using a high end PC. And if you’re wondering what video card handles the game’s visuals, well, EA / DICE just signed a partnership with AMD and they’re actually using an AMD Radeon HD 7990 Malta graphics card, which according to AMD, is the “fastest graphics card in the world”. (Hmmm, not really a hardcore when it comes to PC components but just wondering if my current GeForece GTX 680 can run this game with the same quality as the gameplay demo.)

Game is expected to go on sale this fall and I’m sure I’ll be one of those people who will purchase the game on day 1. In the meantime, I’ll just savour playing the PC version of Battlefield 3 which I just downloaded a few days ago while waiting for Battlefield 4 :P Watch the 17 minute gameplay video above if you haven’t watched it yet.
